Catherine “Kay” Sieg

May 17, 2023

Catherine “Kay” Elizabeth Sieg, 88, of South Branch passed away on May 11, 2023, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in St. James with her daughters by her side. A celebration of life was held Tuesday, May 16, 11 a.m., at St. John’s Lutheran Church in South Branch with the Rev. Matthew Rusert officiating with visitation on Monday, 4–7 p.m. Online condolences can be left and a livestream of the service can be viewed at www.zahariafamilyfuneral.com.

Kay was born on March 20, 1935, in Bingham Lake to Ray and Margaret (Malady) Davis. Kay was their only daughter with five brothers. She attended school in South Branch and Truman High School. She married Wilbert Sieg on Feb. 4, 1956, and they lived in rural Lewisville until they purchased their forever home and farm in South Branch. They were blessed with seven children — four boys and three girls. As daughter Jodi would say, “They saved the best for last” when she arrived on Christmas Day. Kay was a great cook and shared her skills as a cook for St. John’s Parochial School and later at Pleasantview Good Samaritan Nursing Home for 21 years until her retirement. Kay always had a huge garden which kept her busy canning and cooking for her large family. She continued to work in her garden up until last year when her health declined. Kay always looked for a new recipe and made sure the cookie jar was full for anyone who stopped in at the farm. The cookie jar was the first stop when visitors came by. Even the farm dogs enjoyed their “treats” from the cookie jar! Kay always put everyone’s needs before her own. Kay loved playing cards with family and was active in the Truman 500 card club with her partner, Olivia, for 48 years. Kay was also known for the many quilts she made for her children and grandchild and crocheted baby blankets.

Kay will be missed by her children, Douglas (Midge) Sieg of Truman, Curtis Sieg of St. James, Brian Sieg of St. James, Alan (Rudine) Sieg of Truman, Julie (Dan) Barickman of Garner, Iowa, Jackie (John) Luttrell of Clark, S.D., and Jodi Hill of Maxwell, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Steph, Stacy, Darcy, Derik, Tucker, Matt, Samantha, Nicole and Isabelle; 12 great-grandkids with another on the way; brother, Jim Davis; sisters-in-law, Marlene Davis and Olivia Kopischke; many nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert of 64 years; granddaughter, Kimberly Sieg; great- granddaughter, Emilie Hissam; and brothers, Donny Davis, Robert Davis, Richard Davis and Gary Davis.
