Joyce Jeannine Hines passed away peacefully May 19, 2024, in San Diego, Calif., at age 94. She was born Sept. 3, 1929, in Fairmont to Henry and Carrie (Mau) Walston and grew up in Truman. She married Cyril Hines on Jan. 26, 1951, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. They were married for 69 years. Joyce and Cyril lived the first few years of their marriage in San Francisco, Fairmont and Truman. In 1957, Cyril re-enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in San Diego. Joyce called San Diego home for the next 67 years. Cyril passed away in February 2020.

A lifelong subscriber to the Truman Tribune, Joyce had fond memories of her hometown, her grandfather’s farm in Waverly Township and her father’s homemade ice cream. She was confirmed at Waverly Lutheran Church in 1942 and graduated from Truman High School in 1947. She was Homecoming queen in 1946. In her youth, she was active in 4-H, played the violin and especially enjoyed writing and journalism, winning a statewide award in 1947 for an editorial on brotherhood and peace.

After high school, she worked at a dude ranch in Arizona and then as a comptometer operator at Dayton’s in Minneapolis. From her time in the Southwest, she developed a love of Native American art. She always kept up with the news and learned to use a computer in her 70s. She was proud of the roses, oranges and lemons she grew in San Diego.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and wife, a talented seamstress, wonderful cook and baker, and dedicated keeper of family genealogy. Her smile warmed everyone around her.

Left to cherish her memory are: children, Cynthia (Fred Ramsey), Michael and Heidi (Dennis) Gutgesell; grandson, Jared Gutgesell; sister, Ruth Trittelwitz; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and sister May Hoelmer. She will be dearly missed. Inurnment will be at Miramar National Cemetery, San Diego, Calif.
