Gladys Belgard

Gladys Irma Urban was born on June 3, 1928, in rural Vernon Center (Willow Creek). She was the youngest of eight children. Gladys died on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023, at Heartland Senior Living in Truman, and that day ended an era in our family. She was the last of the children (and their spouses) of her parents, Gustav “Gus” and Helen (Ulrich) Urban.

Gladys attended Willow Creek parochial school through eighth grade. She married Harvey Belgard on Nov. 10, 1951, and they had five children. Gladys worked various jobs in Truman and Fairmont prior to their family purchasing Bowl-A-Way Lanes in Truman in 1972.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Neal of St. James, Nancy (Lawrence) Salic, Ellen Borkenhagen, Elliot (Connie), all of Truman, and Susan Belgard of McKinney, Texas; along with 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; special friends Al and Bani Mueller and family; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey; parents, Gus and Helen; brothers, Melvin (Marjorie), Hartwin (Kathryn) and Bernard (Wilma); sisters, Leona (Howard) Chamberlain, Luella (Harold) Doering, Verona (Lorvin) Wilde and Elvera (Elvin) Wegner; and daughter-in-law, Debbie Belgard.

Memorials can be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Truman Ambulance or the charity of your choice.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 17, at 11:30 a.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Truman. Visitation will be held at church on Friday from 10–11:30 a.m. Burial will take place at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery.
